About Jadavpur University
Jadavpur University is a State University in the state of West Bengal and is one of the foremost Universities in India. It has been consistently awarded one of the top slots among the prestigious universities and institutes. Noted for the technical education that it imparts through its faculty of engineering and technology (FET), it also has a vibrant science and humanities department which encompasses a wide range of subjects. Its parent institution was set up by the National Council of Education, Bengal, in 1906. After India's independence, the institution was converted to a University under the First Jadavpur University Act in 1955. Jadavpur University has been declared a University with Potential for Excellence by the University Grants Commission. The University has also been accredited with the status of 'five star' by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
Jadavpur University has a rich history as its predecessor – National Council of Education, which was established in 1906n as the first nationalist university in protest against British hegemony over education. The nationalist movement dubbed Calcutta University, another pillar of India’s education movement, as “Goldighir Ghulamkhana”, or the slave house of “Goldighi”, with reference to the lake adjacent to Calcutta University, and the number of graduates it churned out who were used in British merchant offices as clerks. In 1905 the movement against partition of Bengal culminated into wide spread protests, esp. by intellectuals. Rabindranath Tagore, Aurabindo Ghosh, Raja Subodh Chandra Mullick.
With the passing of the Universities Act of 1904, Calcutta University’s Senate and Syndicate were reorganized by nominating more white members into them to enable the government to control its policies. The government decided to disaffiliate many private Indian colleges, which had come up lately and were regarded by the Government as hot beds of nationalist agitation. The measures stirred the educated middle class to move for alternative systems of education. In 1905, Bengal was partitioned and the Swadeshi movement followed. The anti-partition agitation had as its manifesto, of boycott of foreign modes and also national education. On 16 November the Landholders Society organised a meeting at Park Street, attended by 1500 delegates, among whom were eminent men of the time. The idea of the National Council of Education was mooted here. In a meeting held on 9 November 1905 at the Field and Academic Club, Subodh Chandra Mullick pledged Rupees one lakh for the foundation of a National University in Bengal. On 1 June 1906, the council was registered and on the 11 March 1922 the foundation stone of Sri Aurobindo Bhavan at the present Jadavpur University campus was laid. NCE was set up with Rash Behari Ghosh as its first president.
The Calcutta Municipal Corporation under the leadership of its patriotic Mayor, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das leased the present site of the Jadavpur University campus of N.C.E. where its engineering college was shifted in 1924 under the name of College of Engineering and Technology. Bengal (CET Bengal. Aurobindo Ghosh (later known as Rishi Aurobindo, who established Auroville in Puducherry) was the founder Principal and its founder father and teachers included Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Sir Goorudas Banerjee, Ananda Coomarswamy, Surendranath Banerjee, Ramendra Sunder Trivedi, Radha Kumud Mukherjee, Benoy Kumar Sarkar, Sakharam Ganesh Deoskar, Raja Subodh Mullick, Rash Behari Ghosh and Acharya Prafullya Chandra Roy, the famous professor of Chemistry and a visionary entrepreneur (founded Bengal Chemical).
Society for Promotion of Technical Education in Bengal, was set up by Taraknath Palit, and under it the Bengal Technical Institute came into being on July 25, 1906. SPTE was later amalgamated with the NCE in 1910 and the Bengal Technical Institute passed into its hands. In 1921 the Institute became the first in India to introduce Chemical Engineering as a discipline.
By 1940, the institute was virtually functioning as an independent university, and after Indian Independence in 1947, the West Bengal State Legislature, with the concurrence of the Government of India, enacted the Jadavpur University Act, 1955 to convert the institute into Jadavpur University with full autonomy on (December 24, 1955). Since then the university has observed this date in its calendar as Convocation Day (source: Wikipedia). The blossoming of NCE into Jadavpur University was an achievement made possible by two great souls – Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then chief minister of Bengal, and Dr. Tirguna Sen, erstwhile education minister of Government of India.
Jadavpur University, thus established is primarily a Unitary University with only two affiliated colleges, i.e. Smt.
